This doofus is 6 years old today. He is just another example of fate, and how things are meant to be. I had to run into the pet store for our ailing kitty Batman to get some food for him as we had run out.
As I walked towards the back, there was this guy, sitting in the bottom carrier in a stack of many cats waiting to be placed in cages for an adoption event. I quickly grabbed the food I needed, came back and asked the girl if I could hold him while she set up. She let me.
He just laid there, calmly, purring and soaking up the attention. He was maybe 6 months old. Little did I know this fucker was tricking me. IYKYK.
I asked for an application, and she said she had forgotten to grab them. She told me to go online and apply. I stood there for a while more, people were stopping to look at him. I said he was mine... staking my claim. There was a woman there with her elderly mother looking at the cats as well.
I went straight home and applied for him. I got a call the next day saying that someone got their application in a minute before me. Whhhat?
Turned out to be the lady with the elderly mother. I was horrified. The mother was asking "Will they get bigger?" I jokingly said "Only if you feed them". The rescue adopted him and his brother out to these women. I told them of the conversation. I wasn't happy but it wasn't my decision. Her application didn't get in before mine, they just agreed to take two so they won.
Oh well, wasn't meant to be. We went on our scheduled vacation to Vegas for a week, and when we got home I saw his photo posted on Facebook. He and his brother were returned to "no fault of their own". After owning Barnaby for a while, I know he was too much for them to handle.
I called them immediately and said I was on my way to pick him up. They wanted me to take the brother too, but I didn't. I had room for one cat at the time.
I picked up Barnaby and the search for a new name started. Blue, Mr B, Bandit? Nah Barnaby stuck.
We went through a year of no sleep. This kitten had boundless energy. It had been AGES since we had kittens so I think we forgot but this unique doofus did not let us sleep. He chewed everything plastic in the house. We had to Barnaby proof. At night, we had to place him in a thunder vest to get even a few hours of sleep before he started his shenanigan's.
A month after we got him, Batman lost his battle with CKF. Matt was sad and we started on a search for another kitty that was like Batman. Little did we know that kitty would calm this one. We got Bear a few months later and Daddy Barnaby came out. Thank goodness. Purpose. He took care of that baby and we finally got some sleep.
Fast forward six years later. We have 5 cats and Barnaby raised 4 of them as his own babies. He sleeps through the night, but his attraction to mischief is still there. First thing this AM, he pulled down the mop bucket and spilled the water everywhere. Then went to my mother in laws room and banged on her door.
Life with Barnaby is interesting, he makes us laugh. He is a kind soul, everyone that comes to my home loves him and today is his birthday. Happy Birthday Doofus.
